We are delighted to announce the launch of our new online training module ‘The role of genetics in tree health and forest resilience’.

This third module in our ‘Resilience fundamentals, tree health and non-native pests and pathogens’ training package, follows on from module 1: ‘Meet the threats’ which gives an overview of the risks and challenges that non-native pests and pathogens present to trees, and module 2: ‘Reducing risks for resilient trees’, which looks at how those risks can be minimised to enhance resilience in trees.

Throughout this new module, you will learn:

• • what is meant by genetics and genomics
  • why genetic diversity matters for treescapes
  • about the impact of genetics on tree performance in different locations, and how this can be harnessed to ensure resilient treescapes despite a changing environment
  • about the role of genetics and genomics in resistance to non-native pests and pathogens, and how we can use knowledge of this to maintain healthy tree populations.

This module is aimed particularly at professionals and technical staff working across the forestry and tree health sectors who are interested in learning about the role genetics plays in the health and resilience of our trees and forests. It can also be a useful opportunity for students and scientists from other disciplines to engage with this important topic.

The content has been developed by leading scientists at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and Forest Research who are working on CFP-funded research. Particular thanks go to Dr Daniel Wood (Kew Research Fellow) for leading on content development.

Each of our modules is designed to take around one hour to complete. At the end of each module, you will receive a certificate of completion, which can be logged towards your Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

You can complete our training modules free of charge via the Silvestor e-learning platform, which also hosts training from other sector organisations including the Royal Forestry Society.
